Security Architect, IBM MQ

Rob has worked at IBM for over 12 years and became the Security architect for IBM MQ in 2019. In this role, Rob is responsible for leading the design, development, and release of security features for IBM MQ. Over the past 6 years Rob has released several key features including: TLS 1.3 support and Token Based Authentication capabilities. Rob has a keen interest in cryptography, cybersecurity and is currently working towards certification as a Penetration Testing Specialist.

This session will bring together technical leaders looking to publish a standard (or quasi-standard) for performing end-to-end encryption across various messaging platforms.

Message-level encryption provides a higher grade of security for applications that use shared environments, multi-tenancy, and public cloud services. Currently, there is limited industry collaboration around definition of goals and publishing of specification or guidelines for applications to perform end-to-end encryption across various messaging protocols and platforms.

The goal of this session is to carry over drive-by conversations from MQ Summit 2025 and begin to lay down a roadmap.

Moving data reliably, securely and at scale is a difficult problem, but that is only part of the story. Getting your data to arrive at its destination ready for onward processing is one challenge, getting it to arrive at the destination securely adds another layer of complexity. Messaging is end-to-end and so is security: it’s critical to protect data across delivery boundaries and when at rest. Regardless of your role, it is your responsibility to ensure that happens. What options there are for protecting message data from being maliciously edited or read by the wrong person?, what technologies can be used to protect message data? and what are the challenges in employing these mechanisms.
